The Two-Minute Eviction Notice

Give a recurring thought a job, a time slot, or a polite notice to vacate the front desk.

An occupant with no appointment

A small unfinished task can occupy an astonishing amount of cranial floor space. You haven't called the dentist. You haven't sent the form. Your brain has spent seven days reminding you without ever making the call or sending the form.

Management has reviewed this arrangement and determined that the reminder is consuming more resources than the task.

The notice

Set a two-minute timer. Write the intrusive thought or nagging task in plain language. Ask: does this require doing, scheduling, or consciously letting go?

If it takes less than two minutes and is safe to do now, do it. If it needs more time, assign an actual slot. If there is nothing useful to do, write that down. Do not keep an undefined reminder running as an unpaid background employee.

Today's exercise

Use this sentence: 'Notice to occupant: [task or thought]. Your authorized next action is [action/date], or no further action.' Keep the notice where you will see it when the task can be handled, not where it will interrupt every other activity.

Some matters are complicated and can't be resolved by a timer. That's fine. The notice is for organizing a next step, not for pretending the problem is solved.
